About KEYTRUDA® Infusion Therapy

KEYTRUDA® (pembrolizumab) is an immunotherapy that helps your immune system recognize and fight certain types of cancer. It belongs to a class of medications called immune checkpoint inhibitors, which work differently than traditional chemotherapy.

Normally, cancer cells can hide from your immune system by using a protein called PD-1 to switch off immune cells. KEYTRUDA® blocks this interaction, allowing your immune system to better detect and attack cancer cells. Because it harnesses your body's own immune response, KEYTRUDA® may be used alone or in combination with other cancer treatments, depending on your diagnosis and treatment plan.

What to Expect During KEYTRUDA® Infusion Therapy

KEYTRUDA® is administered as an intravenous (IV) infusion by trained healthcare professionals. Treatment is typically given every 3 or 6 weeks, depending on your prescribed dosing schedule.

During your visit, our experienced infusion team will:

Review your current health status and any new symptoms
Review recent laboratory results and your treatment plan
Check your vital signs
Start your IV and administer your KEYTRUDA® infusion
Monitor you throughout treatment for infusion-related reactions
Ensure you're feeling well before you leave

The infusion itself generally takes about 30 minutes, although your total visit time may be longer to allow for preparation, assessment, and post-infusion monitoring.

KEYTRUDA® Side Effects

Like all medications, KEYTRUDA® can cause side effects. Because KEYTRUDA® works by activating your immune system, it may sometimes cause your immune system to attack healthy organs and tissues. These immune-related side effects can occur during treatment or even after treatment has ended.

Common side effects may include:

Fatigue
Rash or itching
Nausea
Diarrhea
Decreased appetite
Constipation
Joint or muscle pain
Cough
Shortness of breath
Fever

This is not a complete list of possible side effects. Your healthcare provider will discuss the risks and benefits of treatment and monitor you closely throughout your therapy. Serious side effects, although rare, can occur. Please seek medical attention immediately if you are experiencing any signs of allergic reaction, severe diarrhea or abdominal pain, jaundice (yellowings of the skin and eyes), persistent fever, extreme fatigue or dizziness or any new or worsening symptoms.
